A New Awareness of Beauty
Eli Bornstein
September 1st - October 10th, 2015

Picture
Informed by the early abstract movements of Neoplasticism, Constructivism and the work of Charles Biederman, Jean Gorin and Georges Vantongerloo, the structural reliefs represent the formal properties of our environment.

Eli Bornstein (b.1922) taught in the Visual Art Department of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Saskatchewan from 1950 until his retirement in 1999 as Professor Emeritus. He also founded, contributed to and edited, The Structurist Journal from 1960 to 2010. Based in Saskatoon, the artist’s structurist reliefs are the result of six decades of uninterrupted artistic practice.
They are matrices that create an experience of light, colour, form and space underlying our every visual cue and experience. The calculus of these reliefs, in theory, is rigid and precise, but the kinetics of light seen within is subtle and ethereal.

While other abstract movements looked to the supremacy of man over nature this work observes an acknowledgement of nature’s unrivaled presence over humanity. As we seem destined to end our ecological success as a result of an estranged relationship with the environment, this reawakening to nature now seems timely.
