The assertion that abstract painting develops meaning through extended viewing and sustained contemplation factors deeply when I make works.
The process of painting is as much about looking as it is about action. Studying the nuances and the effects when one element is placed down in relation to others is a constant aspect of creating works and continuously informs and questions the next decisions to be made. Thus as a painting develops it may change identities numerous times before revealing a true intentionality.
These paintings are the physical manifestation of the thoughts and emotions that occur as a part of my daily human experience and are an abstract means of responding to the world around me via visual expression.
Each decision I make creates a new pathway for investigation and contemplation. For example, a colour will elicit a reaction from one viewer that will vary depending on that viewer’s own experience and can perhaps be redirected by the introduction of a binary colour dynamic as is true also for shapes and materials.
Various elements all serve to inform a sense of greater meaning that cannot be fully expressed verbally or even be completely planned out in advance but can in some ways begin to address visually the intangible, conflicting and confusing feelings of contemporary life. To find connections and to develop the opportunity for a visual and cerebral challenge is what for me furthers the pursuit of abstract painting.
